Interior Painting

How Long Does Interior Paint Last?

· 5 min read

Freshly repainted interior living space in a South Shore home

Interior paint does not weather the way an exterior does. It wears — from hands, furniture, cleaning, steam and sunlight. That means the life of the finish depends almost entirely on the room.

These are the intervals we see in South Shore homes, assuming a quality product applied over real preparation.

Room by room

  • Bedrooms and formal living rooms: 8 to 10 years
  • Living rooms and family rooms in active use: 5 to 7 years
  • Hallways, stairwells and mudrooms: 3 to 5 years
  • Kitchens: 4 to 6 years, sooner around the range and sink
  • Bathrooms: 3 to 5 years, and shorter with weak ventilation
  • Ceilings: 10 years or more unless there is a moisture or stain issue
  • Trim, doors and baseboards: 5 to 8 years, with edges showing wear first

What shortens the interval

  • Flat or matte paint in a room that gets touched and cleaned
  • Poor bathroom ventilation, which is the number one cause of early interior failure here
  • Skipped primer over patches, which leaves dull spots that never quite blend
  • Strong direct sunlight on a deep accent color
  • Painting over glossy trim without sanding, so the enamel chips at every contact point

Repaint or touch up?

If the wear is localized — a scuffed corner, a patched nail hole — touch-up from the original can works, provided you still have that paint and the wall has not faded around it. Once you are touching up in several places on the same wall, the patches read as visible spots and it is time to recoat the wall.

Making the next one last longer

Choose sheen by function, not habit: eggshell in living spaces, satin in wet and high-traffic rooms, wipeable enamel on trim. Fix the moisture source before painting a wet room. And keep a labeled quart of each color for touch-ups — we leave color and product information at the end of every job.

Common questions

Can I just repaint one wall?

Only if you have the original paint and the rest of the wall color has not shifted. Otherwise the recoated wall reads slightly different from its neighbors.

How long before I can wash a freshly painted wall?

Paint is dry in hours but keeps curing for two to four weeks. Wait until it has fully cured before scrubbing.

Does more expensive paint really last longer?

In high-traffic and wet rooms, yes — premium lines have more binder, which is what resists scrubbing and burnishing.
