How to Choose the Right Paint Sheen for Every Room in Your House

Choosing the right color is only half the battle when painting your interior. Selecting the wrong sheen (paint finish) can lead to scuffed walls, moisture problems in bathrooms, or highlighted wall imperfections in living rooms.

Understanding paint sheens and how they act

Paint sheen refers to the amount of light reflected off the dried paint surface. Higher sheen levels contain more resin, making them harder, more moisture-resistant, and easier to clean.

Room-by-room sheen guide

Match the finish to how the room is actually used:

  • Flat / matte (living rooms & ceilings): hides wall imperfections and bumps, but hard to scrub without leaving marks. Best for low-traffic areas and ceilings.
  • Eggshell & satin (bedrooms, hallways & living spaces): the sweet spot for most interior walls. Offers a soft luster, good washability, and resists everyday scuffs.
  • Semi-gloss (kitchens, bathrooms, trim & doors): highly moisture-resistant and easy to wipe down. Perfect for trim, baseboards, doors, and high-humidity bathrooms.
  • High-gloss (cabinets & decorative accent trim): extremely durable and stain-resistant with a high-shine finish, requiring flawless surface preparation before application.

The mistake we see most often

Flat paint in a hallway or bathroom is the classic regret: it looks great for a month, then every fingerprint shows. During your estimate we walk room by room and recommend the sheen that fits how you actually use the space — traffic, kids, pets and humidity included.

Common questions

What sheen is best for a bathroom?

Semi-gloss or a bath-specific formula. It resists moisture and wipes clean — flat paint in a bathroom tends to mark and hold humidity.

What sheen hides wall imperfections best?

Flat or matte. The less light a surface reflects, the less bumps and patches stand out — which is why ceilings are almost always flat.

Can I use the same sheen in every room?

You can, but it usually means compromising: too shiny shows flaws, too flat can't be cleaned. A room-by-room mix almost always performs better.
