Massachusetts gives exterior painters a real season, not a year. Coatings need surface temperature, low enough humidity and enough hours before dew to form a proper film.

The reliable exterior window
Late spring through early fall is when conditions cooperate consistently on the South Shore. Surface temperatures are in range, wood has had time to dry out after the winter, and there are enough dry hours in a day for coats to set.
Early spring can work on south and west elevations that warm up first. Late fall gets risky fast: nights get cold, dew arrives early in the evening, and film formation suffers even when the daytime number looks fine.
Dew point beats air temperature
A 62-degree afternoon in October with a dew point close behind it means moisture condensing on fresh paint within a couple of hours. That is how you get a soft, spotty finish that never fully hardens.
We watch dew point and surface temperature, not just the forecast high, and we stop coating early enough in the day for the film to set.
Coastal and seasonal factors here
- Salt air in Hull, Cohasset and Scituate leaves residue that has to be washed off before coating
- Wood siding and clapboards need dry time after washing or a wet stretch
- August humidity slows dry time on shaded, north-facing elevations
- Pollen season can contaminate a wet film — timing around it matters

Interior work is the winter answer
Interiors are a year-round service, and winter is the best time to do them. Heating systems keep temperatures stable, schedules are more open, and you get cabinets, trim and full interior repaints done in the months when exteriors are impossible.
Many homeowners here pair the two: interiors and cabinets between November and March, exteriors and decks booked for the following spring.
